Pontoons installed at several North Shore beaches ahead of summer play - 6th Dec 2017

Pontoons installed at several North Shore beaches ahead of summer play To the delight of many children, Auckland Council has installed pontoons at several North Shore beaches ahead of summer.

Pontoons can now be found in the waters of Waiake Beach, Browns Bay, Castor Bay, Cheltenham Beach and Stanley Bay, the council confirms.

Auckland Council's Simon Randall said the council has a resource consent for the pontoons to occupy coastal seabeds outside of a designated mooring area.

"The pontoons are attached using heavy moorings, which are inspected every year," Randall said.

"The moorings are located by divers using GPS coordinates."

The council aims to put the pontoons out around Labour Weekend, which means they are a few weeks late.

During the months where the pontoons are not in use, they are stored in a secure compound in Silverdale.

To ensure swimmers are kept safe this summer, swimmers are urged to use the fitted ladders attached, said Randall.

"Each pontoon is fitted with a boat-boarding ladder, which is hinged at the base so they won't be damaged by contacting the beach at low tide.

"The pontoons also have grab ropes around them for swimmers," he said.
